Introducció
El cinema britànic té, o més ben dit tenia, mala fama. El cert és que compartir idioma amb la indústria de l’entreteniment més poderosa del món ha desdibuixat sovint el perfil de les cintes sortides de les illes. Els actors i directors –i els capitals– de Hollywood s’han sumat moltes vegades als rodatges fets a la Gran Bretanya, i el resultat no sempre ha estat bo.
Però el cinema britànic existeix. Té una manera pròpia de tractar les qüestions socials, una tradició aplicada al terreny del documental, un humor diferenciat, se sent a gust amb la novel·la gòtica, el terror o el cinema fantàstic, capta com cap altre els tics que distingeixen una classe social, sap definir a la perfecció què vol dir la paraula estranger, és capaç d’enviar espies a mig món, de defensar l’excentricitat com a últim reducte de la llibertat i... de continuar circulant per l’esquerra.
La Biblioteca del Cinema dóna recolzament al cicle amb aquesta selecció de textos que permetran conèixer els problemes de Hitchcock amb la transició del cinema mut al sonor, identificar la simbòlica escenografia de Brief Encounter, reconèixer els elements humorístics de The Ladykillers, saber quina va ser la clau de l’èxit de The Knack...and how to get it, destacar la importància del Free Cinema gràcies a l'anàlisi de tres dels seus títols capdavanters, conèixer el significat d’una road movie com In This World i comprovar que dos gèneres tan característics del cinema britànic com són els biopics i el cinema realista segueixen en plena forma gràcies a The Queen i Secrets and Lies.
