Fugint d’una mirada estereotipada envers l’Àfrica (“No m’interessa mostrar la pobresa –escriu- m'estimo més intentar trobar la poesia”), Maldoror s’endinsa en la lluita per l'alliberament d’Angola i la filma a través de la perspectiva d'una dona i mare. Amb el fill en braços, Maria recorre Luanda de presó en presó buscant el seu marit detingut per oficials portuguesos.
